Hi,

As I understand it, if I have, or buy, a MM CD/DVD mapping product then the license allows me to install the software (and the maps) onto two PCs and two "Mobile Devices" (i.e. PPC or Windows Smartphone - I'm excluding the Adventurers here as they presumably come with their own software license).

However, if I buy maps from the Digital Map Shop, these can only be installed onto the main PC (connected to the internet) and either one Mobile Device OR a SD Card. If this is correct please could you clarify the following situations:

1. Presumably the maps, if registered to a SD card, can be used on two different Mobile Devices (not at the same time of course), if they both have MM Licensed software installed?

2. Does it have to be a SD card or could it be Compact Flash, still used by some PPCs? i.e. are the "Secure Digital" functions required?

3. Since most Netbooks have a SD card slot, could the maps registered to a SD card be used with the "PC" software on a Netbook? This could be of help to the people who have misunderstood that in MM's terms a Netbook/Laptop is NOT a "Mobile Device".

I know that all of the above is possible (and presumably legitimate) with the disc-based maps.

Thanks, Alan.

Yes, the SD card could be used in any mobile device that had the Memory-Map software installed.

As long as you use a card reader for the Compact Flash card, then yes the system will treat it as an SD card.

Good question, and to be honest I dont actually know. However I dont think it would work. The reason for this is that I believe only the Pocket Navigator software will look at the storage (SD or CF) card for a licence.

Thanks

Jason

Hi,

Thanks Jason, I was actually expecting a "no" to item 2. and perhaps "yes" to 3., but you make a good point about how the mobile/PC software works.

However, sometime could you (or anybody else?) actually do a definitive test to see if a SD-registered map in a card reader can be used with the PC software? It might well affect my decision whether to upgrade my 1:50k mapping to DMS, or stick with the disc-based maps.

Cheers, Alan.

Hi there

I was interested in this thread but reaced the end to find the last update in this thread was over a year ago... do you have an answer regarding the 3rd question?

I am in a similar situation. Memory-Map software permits installation on PC and Laptop (latter is my mobile device) but I am concerned how I should try and purchase maps from the digital map shop. I have not managed to purchase any yet and am struggling a bit.

Licensing agreement on digital map shop suggests that can only load/activate on one computer and a PDA, and I fear that a laptop might not class as a PDA.

Am I able to purchase from digital map shop and use on both my PC and laptop? If so does it need to be to Desktop and then copy some files to laptop or can I reload same area purchased to laptop in map shop without further charge?

If not can you confirm whether as raised earlier in this thread, a single device such as compact flash could be used, almost like a license dongle, to ensure only run map on one machine at a time?

What are my options?

Thanks

Andy

The license on the SD card is a mobile device license, so you cannot use the map on a PC / laptop. You can use the map on the card if you also have it activated on the PC (to save having two copies).

OK maybe I'm getting confused here.

I have retail Lake District memory map software v5 (for windows) installed on my Desktop and Laptop.

I want to purchase some 1:25000 explorer map coverage using the Digital Map Shop.
Q1) Can I use the purchased maps on both PC and Laptop?

If I purchase some credit from the digital map shop, then select area & activate on my Desktop:
Q2) am I able or allowed to view that map on my Laptop? (if so do I just activate on laptop or do I need to copy files?)

I would like the maps on both, but if I cannot, I want on Laptop in preference to desktop.
Digital map shop complains that I cannot use serial number from laptop, so
Q3) if I can't have on both desktop & laptop, would I need to change registered device from desktop to laptop somehow? I do not want to uninstall from desktop, but new maps more useful on laptop.

Q4) once have maps, do I need to back up somehow in case laptop got stolen?

I hope you can help.

Andy

Q1. AIUI a laptop counts as a PC, if you want to use the same chart on both you would have to buy two licences. You may have to have two separate accounts to do that, I'm not sure if MM allows a single account to spread two or more licences over multiple machines.

Q2. The whole point of the DMS and its activate licence process is that you shouldn't be able to do that (it used to be possible in the old format). Now you would need a second licence.

Q3. On the laptop, open MM, Help>License Management>Online Info & when you're signed in Migrate License.

Q4. If you lose your laptop, you will be able to migrate your licence to a replacement machine and re-download & activate your maps. Also look at the * bit in the migrate licence page.

Hi,

Edit: Ah, I see that flyboy has beaten me to some of the answers, but it would still be nice to receive "official" answers/confirmation from MM Support. ;)

Just to confirm that I'm also still interested in the answers to this thread, but think I can probably answer Q4).

You can backup the .QC3/.QCT map files if you wish (to save downloading them again) but can't use them directly because they are encrypted. If the laptop is stolen/broken/obsolete then you can "Migrate" the license to a new PC and either use the backup files or download them again (for free).

However, what is not clear to me is if you Migrate a map from a PC to laptop if that then "Kills" the PC for any future map downloads/software upgrades, etc.?
*Once a licence is migrated it is no longer possible to activate further resources/credits on the device that the licence was migrated from. - Thanks Jason*

Cheers, Alan.

The licence for Digital Map Shop mapping is for 1 PC and 1 Mobile Device/SD card per purchase.

If the maps are downloaded and activated on the desktop it will not be possible to activate them on the laptop unless you have enough credit to do so.

You would need to migrate your licence from the desktop onto the laptop in order to use the previously activated mapping on it, but a new credit purchase could be used on either the desktop or the PC. Please be aware that if the licence is migrated, it is not possible to activate further products onto the device that the licence was migrated from.

If the laptop is stolen, you can migrate the licence to the replacement and then re-download the existing mapping without being charged.

Thanks
