Hi John Mandy,

OK: re the crashing: see the posts here: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=106

The design oversight (very basic) is that the auto Power Down crashes the software. Jason's statement on this is:

The POWER DOWN TIME feature was never intended to be used on the Memory-Map version of the device.
Basically the manufacturer of the unit have another application which is golf related that the feature was designed for.

The feature does exactly the same as switching the unit off manually, however when switched off manually the unit actually also closes the Memory-Map application correctly.
and

Also we are currently talking to the manufacturer of the Adventurer to see if there is a way to either make the Auto Power Off feature work, or disable it completely for our units
It can't have been tested properly if this is coming up after the unit is on the market and it's such a basic part of the kit and doesn't it make a mess of managing battery life?.

As a touch screen device, its interface and functionality is a long way behind smart phones. Its "back office" functions are all old Windows type dialogs which don't use the available screen area at all - there are plenty of good examples of touch screen interfaces which MemoryMap could have studied and learn from but they have not. Look at ViewRanger and the functionality it has and the interface - it is along way ahead of the ADventurer (I use it on my Nokia N82). Basically, the ADventurer is an old fashioned PDA with minimally modified Memory Map software on it - smartphone technology is way ahead. I bought the Adventurer because I can use the Memory Maps I have and don't have to reinvest in new stuff and because it is allegedly weatherproof. It feels like a poor design rushed out in time for Christmas.

But, if you like it as it is, then that's fine, and if you don't like the evidence then that's fine too!

This topic has gone well off its original topic of conversation. Remember this is not a topic about discussing what the unit can and or cannot do, or what you would like changed or fixed. This topic is just about making improvments to the Getting Started Guide and Online Help Resource

Please keep the discussion on topic.
Any further off topic posts will be deleted without warning, and if it continues the topic will be closed.

Manuals are always one of those things that are very difficult to get right especially with software which can be changed and updated frequently. We therefore decided only to print a Quick Start Guide concentrating on the ‘hardware’ features and rely on the web to provide further advice using our forum and FAQs. Please make suggestions in this thread on which areas you think do need further explanation so we can enhance these online resources.

*NOTE* Any posts that are off topic, or related to hardware wishes and/or useage will be deleted. This thread is just about the Getting Started Guide and Online Help Resource

Thanks

Jason, would it be possible to insert a version number onto your pdf Helpfile to make it obvious when it has been updated?

Thanks

I have just returned from a walk this weekend where I used the Adventurer 2800 in anger for the first time. I found it to work very well and even benefited from having the full maps inside the unit, when I found one footpath closed and had to replan my trip on the fly. However, I did have some problems and as a result, I have some comments on the Help / User Manual and some comments for the wishlist. Here are the documentation comments:

* There is no information on some of the menu items when in Map mode, for example, what does Locked mean in the Routes/Tracks context menu? I feel that the Help should explain the function of every menu item and feature available, even those that might not be needed or used in normal use so that the User knows when the feature is available, what it does and why they might use it.

* The information should be structured so that it is presented in the following three sections:
* Full feature documentation as decribed above.
* How to use with the PC.
* How to use the unit itself, eg when out on a trip.

* I would like to see both the Help inside the Unit and the User Manual indexed to make it easier to find stuff. The above three sections would do for a start.

I hope you find these comments constructive.

There's a lot of troubleshooting material which has come on to the forum as people find out to get round problems. But as the number of topics increases the important bits become harder to find or may be spread around several threads. We are already seeing repeat questions being asked. I would recommend that you collate this acquired knowledge into a troubleshooting section.

I agree. Since I posted my comment above about the content of the Help and my other comments on the Wishlist, I've discovered through these forums that some of my wishlist comments weren't valid. For example, I asked for the map to be locked to actual position, when in fact this already happens. However, unlike every other GPS unit I've ever used, this isn't automatic; you have to select it.

This is even in the Quick Start Guide (on one of the picture sheets), the User Guide and in the M-M Mobile Help. The trouble is, the guide tends to be used when the box is first opened and at no other time; after all it is called the Quick Start Guide. Neither the User Guide or the online Help are indexed, so you have to search using the Mark 1 eyeball. I just didn't find it, because I had no visual clues to tell me what to look for.

If the updates to the User Guide are going to take any significant period of time, I would suggest a full-blown Indexed FAQ, which pulls out the key points and references the appropriate documentation.

Thanks for this helpfile! Without it, I've just spent a couple of hours trying to download a map of West Yorkshire that I got from the shop on to my 2800. Everytime I looked at the result, it showed Dartmoor! Thanks to the pdf I have now discovered that I have to locate the downloaded area on the route planner map before opening it. Sure enough that works, but do I have to do this every time I want to locate a downloaded map? Is there no way to lock it in?

regards

Beejay

Hello,

Great wee unit though I like others am having a few teething problems.

I stupidly sent regions 5 & 6 Landrangers to the unit before realising about the size restrictions and now I'm not sure how to safely remove them.

The tap and hold option isn't working here in the map list, and when I plug the unit into my laptop to try to delete them from the drive / SD card it opens Memory Map on the laptop and I'm not sure if deleting from there will also remove them from my laptops drive as well.

My discs are on the other side of the country at the moment so I don't want to risk removing them without being able to re-install as I need the maps at the moment.

Sorry if this is me just missing an obvious point.

Thanks
Goatboy.

You can delete them from the SD card in windows.

Just browse the card and it will be quite obvious which files to delete. I have doen this with no problems.

Cheers Golf2111,

Wasn't too sure if I was just browsing the card as every time I access it, it opens memory map europe up on the computer, should be back with the disks soon anyways in case I do something daft.

Cheers for the help
Goatboy.
