Hi

I am using the unit with one of the additional 8gb memory cards preloaded with software purchsed from Memory Map.

Whilst the stated maximum file size you can transfer to the unit for non-DMS maps is 400mb, I find that OS maps greater than approx 320mb, and French IGN maps greater than 280mb, will not consistently open within the unit. I get the standard "cannot open file" error messge.

Sometimes a map can be opened from the Map List, but not by zooming in or selecting from the list of maps for your current location. And sometimes will not open at all by any means. In other words unreliable.

Any suggestions from anyone - in addition to the obvious one of loading in maps in very small fize sizes?

And if anyone is counting, my battery isolation switch just fell off one day a few months back. Haven't seen it since. I now turn it on and off using the stylus.

My bike mount has not broken yet - though I have only used it once.

Regards

Damian

I cannot say that I personally have had any issues with 400MB .QCT map files on the Adventurer 2800.
Are there a large amount of overlay files loaded into the Adventurer 2800 for the maps that dont open correctly?

Please contact support@memory-map.co.uk with a copy of this topic, so we can raise an RMA for you.

Thanks

Thanks for your response. There is no overlay data in the unit. It is purely the map that I am loading, which I do by enclosing with a closed route, then sending that to the unit. Other than the maps, there is no data held on the unit.

dmaher,

Delete all the mapping you have sent to the SD card, and then re-send 1 400MB section to the SD card.
Does this 1 area consistently open correctly?

Thanks

I will give that a go and get back to you. I probably won't have the opportunity to do that until next weekend however.

Ideally I would like to have the whole of France at 1:1million, 1:250k and 1:100k permanently resident on the memory card, then just load in 1:25k for the area I am visiting at that time. I have been working on the assumption that repeated loading and deleting of files will lead to fragmentation of files, and hence more chance of failure or slow performance.

Currently I have loaded 1:1million, which is fine as one file, and 1:250k is fine split into two files. 1:100k is mostly OK split between about 10 files, but fails to open at about 290mb. Likewise 1:25k fails at that size.

The data on the card currently represents about half the card's capacity.

Large files will open once, when the unit is first switched on. So the file has transferred correctly. However, the second time you try to open a large file you get the "Failed to open file", and "Cannot open file" double error message. If you close the MM software and restart it, then again you can open the large file, but once only.

For me a large file from the IGN France range is 290mb or thereabouts. Files below that size currently appear to work OK.

So not a tragedy, just a pain when you have gone through a process of dividing the whole of the Alps at 1:25 into carefully sized tiles and transferring them to the unit, to have to start again using a lower max size.

If you can think of something that may be causing this, I would be interested to hear - though having got to a point where it appears to be working OK, I am pretty happy to let sleeping dogs lie.

dmaher,

It sounds as if the unit is having trouble consistently reading the SD card.
What type of SD card is it?

Thanks

Hi.

I am using the 8MB SD card sold by yourselves with the MM software pre-loaded, specifically for use with this unit. I bought two of them in December 2009.

dmaher,

Do both cards have the same issue with opening map files?

Thanks

I have not tried the IGN maps on the other card. I use the other card for OS maps, though that one has been failing at a slightly larger size - maybe about 350mb from memory.
