Thanks for modifying to use mm on the iPad, it looks great. However, after a few seconds, the red circle turns grey, and gps signal is lost. Other apps ok as far as I can see. Anyone else seen this?

I am having the same, and is perfectly repeatable.
It only updated 1 to 3 times then goes grey and stops.
When you flip to the speed/location screen, the numbers appear in a different colour and you see it quickly go though all the updates it should have on the map screen, once the text turns back, if you go to the map screen, it is at the correct location. Again, it only updates once or twice then turns grey again.

This does not occur in any other application, and does not occur on the speed display, only the map.

Am using the paid version of the app and a 50k (1.8 gig) map loaded.

We have had quite a few people using the ipad here in the States, without any problems.

Do you have the 3G version of the ipad? The wifi only model does not have a GPS. Do you have a Sim card installed and the 3G enabled, not in flight mode?

Are you outdoors, with a clear view of the sky?

When you flip to the data page, what does it show as the Accuracy? When the text turns blue, does the position or accuracy change, or do all the number stay exactly the same?

Here is test routine
Full sky view
Load app
Red circle present direction indicator works, padlock icon bright
After 3 to 5 seconds, circle turns grey. Direction still works. Padlock still bright, but willnotcentre map any longer.
Switch to stats page
Accuracy shown as 16 feet
Switch back to map, circle red once for, again for 3 to 5 seconds.circle now grey
Wait for 1minute, and switch to stats page, text blue for split second, then black, accuracy 16 feet.

Pls let me know any sequence tests you require.
iPhone app under same conditions works perfectly.

64gig 3G, gps lock of 5 Meters
Using maps downloaded from PC
Connected via 3G, WIFI turned off.
GPS works perfect in all other apps, and when page is flipped.

Problem is exactly as described above.
I have taken screenshots so you may see exactly what I described.
It sounds the identical issue the OP is having.

Also, to answer the other question. When the text turns blue it changes.
What it shows is relevant, albeit stale data.
Example, in vehicle, turns grey for 30 seconds, flip the page, blue text quickly (over a second or so) shows all the relevant updates that should have been seen on the map view. It is not random or spurious data.
Once text turns back, the Map screen will update with that position, and sometimes a few after it, before freezing and going grey again.

We have not been able to reproduce this problem.

These symptoms indicate to me that the iPad's Location service is not sending position updates to the app. If the app does not hear anything from the Location service for 5 seconds, it marks the position as invalid, but it leaves the Lock icon enabled (that's a bug, actually!).

I noticed in the screenshot that your battery level is pretty low. I wonder if there is something in the system that shuts down the GPS while the battery is low. Do you get the same problem with a full charge?

I wonder whether any other user activity, such as scrolling the map, or opening the "Find Place" screen, starts the GPS up again. There is nothing on the Flip side that is supposed to control the Location service, so it appears to be a side effect.

Also, I wonder if the behavior is the same if you are moving?

What operating system version are you using? (Settings app, General, About, Version).
