I've been trying out the import function trial available for Memory Map and have hit a complete brick wall as far as being able to accurately calibrate maps converted from ECW to TIF through the recommended ERDAS Viewer (also tried IrfanView) and then opened in Memory Map. I have a full map set that contains the same maps in ozfx and ECW format. I've tried using the .tab file associated with the ECW file for the calibration points and I've also tried using the lat/long data from OziExplorer, using the exact same map that's been converted by the map supplier to the ozfx3 format. I've also tried a UTM conversion tool using the .tab data and nothing seems to be able to provide the correct coordinates to calibrate just one map. At one point I thought I'd nailed it, only to find that once again things were off.

Another issue that I've tried to get an answer to through searches and email to Memory Map, without any success, is whether the fully licensed import tool does away with the TIF files, once they are converted in Memory Map .qct and .txt format. The reason I'm trying to find this out is that I want to import maps to a tablet and don't want 300MB TIF files supporting the .qct and .txt files. Currently, I have the TIF file located in a C:/Maps/Converted folder and when I do a conversion and calibration, I get an additional .jpr and .mcf file in the Conversion folder, as well as a .qct and .txt file in the C:/Maps folder. If I delete the TIF file, I lose the .qct file as well.

Am I simply barking up the wrong tree with what I'm doing and what I'm expecting?

Cheers

Ray

Hi Ray,

Have you tried reading the .TXT file? I seem to remember it's an error report which may explain your problems.

Once correctly calibrated, the .QCT file should be all that is required, with the optional .QED (Elevation Data) and .MMI (Placenames Index) files with same name, if that data is available.

Cheers, Alan.

I'm trying to convert non-qct files (.TIF images via the conversion software) into .qct files. There is no .txt file until that has been done. It's the the transition that is simply not working.

Cheers

Can you send me a copy of the TXT file? (support@memory-map.com) Also, when you refresh your map list, are you selecting the CLEAR ALL PREVIOUSLY LOADED MAPS option? This would clear the QCT files from the folder.

The txt file comes up with an error, but I'll send you a copy of all the related files. Also, each time I've loaded the files, I cleared the previously loaded maps.

Cheers

QCT files that you want to keep could be copied to a separate folder after creation. QCT files not in this folder will not be cleared each time.

I've emailed the details with all the relevant files. Hope it makes sense.

Cheers

OK, I've finally worked out how to get the calibration working. I had to use OziExplorer in conjunction with Memory Map and with the same maps open (one the ozfx3 file and the other a TIF), I used OziExplorer's lat/long figures (the first figures visible just above the map) and input them exactly (including the S/E designations) into the Memory Map calibration tool. It worked perfectly and when I started my GPS, it showed the exact location. I still don't know whether I can delete the TIF files after the conversion is complete (with the licensed version).

I might also add that I found a much easier way to convert the ECW files, I just used the OziExplorer 'Save Map to Image' option and it created a .bmp file which was easy to then save as a TIF file, as smaller file size to boot.

Cheers

You only need to keep the original TIFF file if you ever need to go back and add additional calibration points to your map (The more the better!)
Otherwise you can delete it.

Unfortunately, when I've tried that, the map will not open. In fact, whenever I open Memory Map and then a converted map, it always shows the TIF file downloading first. That's why I want to know if the fully licensed version will allow me to delete the TIF files.

Cheers
