Hi - I have been using the latest version of Memory-Map on a Windows 7 PC with no problem until recently.

Now, when I search for a place the system freezes and I have to close the program.

Also, more recently, I start the program and find a variable area of "grey" i.e. there is no map in some grid squares. This can disappear when changing magnification but reappears when you go back to the original magnification.

I reloaded the disc today but it has made no difference.

Could there be a program overload situation with too many routes, tracks and marks on the overlay side?

Any help would be appreciated. I am thinking of deleting the whole program and reloading but I am not sure about Exporting everything. Is it possible to reload parts of the whole afterwards?

Hi Keith,

The "find place" hang might be a different problem (which we can deal with later if necessary), but the "blank map squares" are probably covered in this thread. Note that a simple "reinstall" is unlikely to help.

An excessively large number of overlay items is unlikely to be the problem, but you can export the whole overlay to a file, or only "Save Visible" (having used the "Hide"/"Visible" attributes). In principle you can also save any "category" or subcategory from the "tree" window (right-click on the item) but a bug (corrupt file created) has been reported when saving from the tree window.

While looking to backup overlays etc. I found this in the Map Overlays folder: userdata-Memory-Map-OS-5.mmo.corrupt CORRUPT

Looks like it might be corrupt - I just deleted it and the "grey squares" problem is gone!

However, there is still a problem with Search - Find Place/Find Coordinates. It takes a while to work, the screen goes blank (map disappears) except for tracks etc., then the marker flag appears and that's it - no map. I can then go to Map List and reload the map, wait maybe a minute, and all is ok again.

Have you any suggestion about this or should I do the complete unistall as you describe above. I am not 100% computer-literate but I can manage ......

A "feature" of MM is that during a "find place" search it ALWAYS (re-) loads the map with the largest scale at the searched location. But sometimes (IMHO far too often) this map is not the best to use. For example it may choose a Digital Map Shop map which hasn't even had the area downloaded/purchased (so it just displays a white field with black crosses).

Perhaps in your case there is a "problem" with the largest scale map. Try to fully "Scale in" (the toolbar Icon or keyboard 'I') or look at the top of the list presented by > right-click > Maps at Cursor. If there does appear to be a problem with that map, then you could try deleting and/or reinstalling it. But if the problem appears to match that in the thread I linked above, then a full software re-install might be necessary.

Note that the placenames search index itself is stored in a .MMI file with the same name as the map. So when the map is switched, so is the index file (if it exists), which can add further confusion.

Scaling in and right-click Maps at Cursor seems to be no problem. I feel a complete uninstall and reload coming on. I'll come back if there's a problem!
