I've recently purchased the MM Central, Northern and Wales combined map showing OS Landranger 1:50000 maps.

The seamless mapping is great when using MM but as I intend to use both MM and traditional OS paper printed sheets, is there a way to find which OS sheet number I am looking at in MM and indeed identify areas where the OS sheets overlap?

For example, in MM, am I looking at an area covered by OS sheet 128 or 119 or perhaps the area covered by both these sheets?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Hi,

MM don't supply map regions based around the OS paper map areas (hint I believe that Anquet do) so AFAIK they're not supported.

The method I used was to scan the map shown on the back of any Landranger paper map and calibrate that scanned map within MM. You can then right-click "Maps at cursor" (or simply the "Scale Out" icon) to see the boundary of the current paper map. Sadly, for import/calibration you need a MM "Navigator" license (which is no longer included with most MM products) and ridiculously even "promotional" maps like the map of the paper map boundaries are "OS copyright" so AFAIK it isn't legitimate to offer it for download/distribution.

Cheers, Alan.

The method I used about 3 years ago (for Explorer 1:25k maps) was to find a .jpg diagram of the maps (from the OS website, I think) convert it to .png and import to MM amd calibrate.

I had a quick look on the OS site just now, but sadly coudn't spot it again. A more determined search just might succeed.

Thanks for the suggestions dales and Alan. Very helpful.

I found an image in the 'Buy Now' Landranger section of the OS site.

Will have a go at calibration next.

The jpg that I previously found, was better than the gif image on the "Buy Now" section of the OS site, as it had various towns and cities marked thereon, to aid location.

But if the OS has now stopped providing this jpg, I'm sure it will have saved them at least threepence pa on their ISP download bill.

Hi,

That image is only 800 pixels high (i.e. about 1 mile per pixel), so (if you can't find anything better) I'd be inclined to "expand the canvas" to at least several thousand pixels, if you can, in an image processing application such as PaintShopPro, before calibration. Maybe also cut/paste the Orkney/Shetland isles to their correct location.

An alternative solution would be to create an overlay file containing closed routes around each paper map region. I started to do this by noting the corner GRs of the Landranger maps in the reference section of my local library, but it was just too much work for the whole UK (unless anyone can find a database of the paper map boundaries).

Cheers, Alan.

Looking at this from a different direction, the OS 1:50k place name gazetteer is now a free download as OpenData, and includes the 1:50k sheet(s) covering each place listed. So you could look up a placename within the area you are interested in and get the sheet number that way.
