I have an etrex that is 7 years old, it has been updated with the latest Garmin software (3.10)using webupdater

I have the latest version of Memory Map Version 5.4.2 Build 1089

Memory map is recognising the etrex and will send a route to it, but it only has the waypoint number and the distance and no grid references

Any ideas why?

Hi,

Are both the eTrex and MM set to use OSGB co-ordinates (assuming your route is in the UK) ?

Are you sending the route from the Map window or from the Properties window (which has been reported to have a bug) ?

Are you using a USB to Serial adapter (and ensured that the PC has the latest drivers) ?

Cheers, Alan.

Hi,

I presume it's one of the original "yellow" eTrexs?

As far as I can see from the User Manual, the "Route" page is only supposed to show waypoint names and distances. Are you saying that the "Review Waypoint" page (for any of the waypoints in the route) doesn't show the Grid Reference and/or that the route/waypoints are not visible on the "Map" page?

Cheers, Alan.

I have a similar problem with the same Garmin GPS and Memory Map edition. I am also using a serial to USB converter (with current software). When I export to the GPS the route name appears in the GPS and 6 of the 67 waypoints. Unfortunately they are all waypoint 0001 and show a distance of 0 miles. I get an accompanying message like "timeout sending packet: 30" or "Garmin GPS: Failed to get device protocol capabilities."

Anyone got any ideas? Trying to sort out glitches like these takes hours and makes you wonder why you ever started in the first place.

John

I am getting exactly the same problems as John. I used this set up with an Etrex OK. But trying it with an Etrex H I get this timeout package thing. Sometimes I get the first waypoint. Then on the MM itself, it sends the route to my overlays. So, when you try 5 times, you get 5 more copies of the route on the PC!! I have spent hours trying to sort this out so would dearly love an answer.

Hi,

To me, that doesn't seem like the same problem as the others and I don't see why it should happen if you are correctly SENDING data to a GPS.

These probelms are usually caused by an "old" USB driver (what version of Windows are you using), but if you do get the "timeout" problems it's often worthwhile to disconnect everything and reboot the PC (and the Garmin) before starting again. If you're sending routes from the map screen (not from the "tree") then another thing to try is ensure that the etrex is NOT in "simulator" mode (which certainly causes problems with my Garmin).

Cheers, Alan.

I get thje same problem as Samellis - every time MM fails to send the route in full to my etrex it adds a copy to the overlay files. I am using Vista and I have tried re-booting without success. The driver software I am using for the RS232/usb conversion is the one on the mini CD supplied with the cable. The fact that MM sends the route title and one of the waypoints seems to indicate thatthe cable is connected OK.

That might be the problem. If the chip is made by Prolific you should be able to find the latest drivers on the web (maybe even from a link on this forum). Unfortunately, some of the cheaper/older USB-serial adapters just don't work properly with Win7/Vista. Did the cable/adapter say it is certified to use with Vista/Win7 ?

Cheers, Alan.

The Prolific driver is here on the MM site.
