A friend took me for a flight in his Piper PA28 Cherokee yesterday. Using the Memory-Map app, my ipAd lost the GPS signal regularly. Yet my smartphone, an HTC Touch Pro 2 under Windows Mobile, also using Mem-Map, kept it consistently.

Does that point to an inherent problem with the GPS function on the iPad? If so, I'm wondering if the 1969 plane's engine, despite being well-suppressed, could be causing interference that affects only the iPad for some reason?

Or is it likely to be an issue with the iPad app? I'm inclined to suspect so, as I have found it decidely inferior to the WM version in several respects. And it frequently appears to close spontaneously for no apparent reason, particularly when using 'second screen' features (accessed via the right hand arrow icon).

Hi Terry,

Maybe Richard will give you an answer in the iPhone "room" (which I hate as it doesn't allow editing).

I don't use an iPhone/iPad of any sort but I suspect that these Apple devices are over-dependent on "Assisted GPS" (data via the phone network and/or WiFi). I believe that the iPhone3 GPS was reviewed as the "worst GPS ever tested"; the iPhone4/iPad may be better but in my (limited) experience many/most "built-in" GPSs perform far less well than a separate external BlueTooth GPS.

Cheers, Alan.

terrypin,

Questions like this really are generally best answered either by Richard or by another User.
The reason for this is that firstly no-one in this office actually has an iPad, and secondly no-one in this office flys.

However, I think Alan may well have hit the nail on the head with

Thanks
