I too was using a screen protector to prevent scratching. Other people nothing to do with mm have told me that not only could mm use this to void the guarantee as a screen protector would reduce screen sensitivity but it would also count as me unofficially adapting/altering the product thus also voiding the guarantee! Therefore I was lucky to be offered the £160 replacement.

I agree mm are behaving very badly over this, but having spent vast amounts on maps and a licence they have me over a barrel I have no choice but to accept their offer.

I haven't found that the screen protector makes any difference to the responsiveness or sensitivity of the screen to the touch so I can't think of any reason to not use one. I am experiencing situations when the unit responds only intermittently and erratically when out on bike rides, occasionally locking up for 5 to 10 minutes without me being able to interact with it. But that is an entirely different issue, software problems I think. At least it continues to record my tracks while it is playing up in this way.

Good luck

Tim

It is ludicrous to say you cannot utilise your finger on a touch screen device, especially when instructed within the instructions and promotional videos.

If we must ONLY use the supplied stylus, does this mean that MM will replace my scratched screen caused by the stylus on the first days use - before I knew to fit a screen protector.
To have paid £300 for what I though was going to be the best GPS available, then deface it while sat in the chair at home - really spoilt my first day.

Then the screen lock issues (still not resolved to my satisfaction while I cannot read the screen when locked), + the many others.........
I know 100% of the people will never be satisfied, but, with all our voiced concerns and positive feedback to help the manufacturer perfect the optimum/worldbeating product surely we should be closer by now.

Within my business, competitors watch what the competition in doing and when they market a new/important feature they replicate it asap. You would think MM competitors would be monitoring these forums seeing where MM are excelling or failing to deliver and then developing within their own products. Or perhaps non of them really care about the customer so long as they reach profit targets.

Personally, I have been loyal to MM products for years on PC, handheld and standalone GPS investing a considerable amount on map (like most people - originally the mapset for the country set you back over £1000!) BUT NO MORE I AM THROWING IN THE TOWEL!

I will use my 3500 until it expires and thats me with MM.

That's very interesting! My 3500 has just suffered a shattered screen to which I am very puzzled how it happened - I always keep the unit in the hard case provided, haven't dropped it or anything like that, and the screen appeared to crack when I tapped it with my finger! I assumed that I must have knocked the case on something e.g. when climbing a stile.

What's more worrying is to hear there is no screen replacement available - i cannot simply afford to replace the unit

Will be contacting MM for help so will post when I know more.............

I wish you luck. See my earlier posts on this. MM refused to accept that the screen could break and in the end I had to pay the £160 they offered as a gesture of good will for a new one that did not even have the May update on it when it it came. If more people come forwards with this fault they may even eventually admit it can happen and give me a refund. I certainly no longer have faith in them as a viable honest company and take every measure to advise people from buying from them.

Same problem Came in out of -8'c into warm room at 20'C and within minutes I had a crack across the bottom RH half of the screen. Can no longer power on. Current reply from MM is £160 to replace? Awaiting events as I think they have a problem!

MM know they have a problem with the 3500 but they won't admit it, it is a very nice GPS and easy to use, but seeing that a few use it for safety reasons, me included (for kayaking) it should be sorted out as it is not fit for purpose.

This is depressing reading which I wish I had consulted before forking out £380 on a 3500. The unit saw two successful days on walks, and I was very pleased, as I have always been with MM products up to know. On a third day, I only used the unit indoors as I wanted to test how long the battery would last; having done that I put the unit back in its case and I am certain the screen was undamaged. Next day when I took it out of the case, the screen had shattered. It would have been impossible for anything to strike it during that time, so to me, it has to be a manufacturing fault (and I have only used either finger or provided stylus on the screen). MM advised me to return it to Performance Products in Runcorn, which I did. They have written saying '..it appears that the LCD screen has cracked beneath the touch screen membrane. As this type of damage to the unit is not covered by our warranty, we would be willing to replace the screen for £79.99....'. They go on to say 'If you do not wish to take advantage of the above offer.....we can return your original unit to you for disposal, or we can arrange for it to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner'. I am gobsmacked - 'offer', 'disposal'; what an attitude.

Does MM not read this forum - lets have some comments from them.

My screen has also shattered. After experiencing lack of response i pressed hard with my finger nail and it shattered. I have returned it for repair and hope I don't experience the same problems that others say they have with replacement. The unit is only 5 months old and this is the second A3500 as the first one I was sent had a faulty touch screen and was replaced free of charge after 2 months use.
Wish I stayed with the A2800 with which I have experienced no problems for 3 years. Watch this space.

They have offered me a repair for £79.99 so I have accepted. I will make sure that if I get a lack of response again, I will not be pressing hard but will return it for a refund.

Have sent me a new one as they can't get hold of spare screens:-))

I am disgusted with MM. Do they not read these posts and at least try to defend themselves?

Re my April 29 post, Performance Products obviously (as I told them) had me over a barrel - either cough up £79.99 because they refuse to believe me and refuse to accept there is a production problem (they obviously dont read these posts either) or have the unit destroyed. My original letter to them was copied to MM, who have not responded. When I wrote to PP reluctantly accepting their 'offer' I asked them for advice on avoiding problems in the future - they have now returned the 3500 repaired but no covering letter with any advice. Both firms need a lesson in customer care.

Whatever happened to Jason - has memory map silenced him.

PLEASE RESPOND MM OR LOSE MY FURTHER CUSTOM

Roger Taylor
