I have just switched from running Memory Map on a PC and PDA (Ipaq) to a Samsung Note with the chief application being marine navigation. Unless I am doing something wrong, the scale on the Samsung at maximum zoom is just not sufficient as an aid to navigation in many areas of the Scottish West coast. For example using the same 1:25000 chart on the Ipaq and the Samsung, a 200 m wide channel is 21 mm on the Ipaq screen (a working size) but only 7 mm wide on the large Samsung screen. Is this problem peculiar to high resolution android screens, such as the Note?

The zoom is determined by the resolution of the map. It is set such that the map will show at a given number of pixels for a specific scale. If you have one screen that shows 480 pixels across and another that shows 800 pixels across (in this case) with roughly the same screen size, you will have a much smaller image on the high resolution screen. The zoom is set to allow one "step" beyond the native resolution of the map.

Thanks for the information, which is what I feared. This means dispensing with the Samsung Note and resorting to older technology (the Ipaq) or reducing the resolution on the Samsung which, following some research, is seemingly not a simple thing to achieve. As other android devices increase their resolutions over time, this will become a more widespread problem. Another zoom level would fix the problem (at least for the time being).

I fully agree with Colin that this restriction on zooming is a nuisance and an avoidable one.
Clearly over-zooming can be a problem, but this could always be allowed after 'accepting' a 'disclaimer'-type message.
Please allow more zooming.

I've had this problem as well, also previously with a Toshiba TG01 running windows mobile 6.5 with 800 pixels in 9cm. When I started using it, it was fine but my eyesight has deteriorated with age and I cant read the map details anymore. Why cant there be 2 or 3 more zoom positions for all us blind old folk?
