Hi, a question and some tips for other users who are struggling with this!

I'm using the 'free' MM app and have previously bought DMS sections of 1:25k maps & successfully transferred to the phone. When I saw that the new 1:50k full GB map now included the iPhone license (ie that I no longer needed to buy the £20 app) I bought it pronto.

Since I can't afford the space on my phone to transfer the whole GB map (& anyway only need 'chunks' to cover local and holiday destinations) I decided to follow the instructions ("Transferring maps to iPhone" written by Laura in Feb 2010) and do it in sections. This is where the problems began of course...

I selected my area by drawing a route and right-clicking, choosing "Operations"/ "enclosed area"/ "send to mobile device". Problem - where Laura says "Name the map" I don't see an option to change the name (this possibly relates to the question later on). The pop-up has a space to choose the drive (eg "My Documents") but no obvious place to enter a name for the map. I tried adding a name at the end of the path (ie "...My Documents\OS1to50Lakes") but just got an error "Failed to copy map".

Anyway, checking My Documents, sorted by date modified, I see 3 files at the top: os50_gb_2012_complete.qed, os50_gb_2012_complete.QC3 and os50_gb_2012_complete.mmi, all created just then. Problem - where's the .qct file (which also needs to be copied to the phone)?? This foxed me for a few minutes until I realised that it was there BUT the file creation date was 21/11/2011 so it didn't appear with the other files! Also - I discovered in another post that the .QC3 file needs the suffix changing to lower case (ie .qc3) when transferring to the iPhone app for some reason!

Having been unable to name the map when creating, I then changed the file names (all 4) to relevant ones (eg "OS_1to50_Lakes.qed" etc) and copied them across in iTunes. Bingo, success. Of course, you probably only need to copy across the .qc3 and the .qct files but what the heck, the others are only small & they might come in handy one day!

For the next chunk of mapping I did exactly the same (including changing the name of the same, 'old' qct file that was created again) and copied across. Bingo, success, I now have 2 discrete 1:50k maps & relatively small file sizes.

However, Problem - on the phone, in the map list, I now have 2 (and will eventually have several) maps just called "OS 1:50k Great Britain". This is presumably because the map extracts were not named when creating them & my simple re-naming of the files in 'file manager' on the PC had no effect.

Question - How can I name or re-name the different 1:50k chunks so that I know which one to select?

Thanks!
David

Hi David,

Yes, I believe the "name" option is not available whilst cutting .QC3 format maps. AFAIK the displayed map name can only be edited on the PC software. Therefore, when "cutting" the maps it's best to first send the files to a folder on the local hard drive (before transferring with Windows Explorer, or whatever).

Open the map on the PC software (double-clicking on the .QCT file may be sufficient), select Map > Edit Map Properties... , and change the name at the top of the pane.

Cheers, Alan.

Perfect, thank you Alan! :-)

Yep, in "file manager"/ "windows explorer"/ "My computer" or whatever anyone wants to call it, just double-click the .qct file of the chunk needing re-naming. This will launch MM (I thought it best not to have MM open already in case of confusion with the full GB map, but it may not be an issue) showing just the chunk in question, and clicking on "Map"/ "Edit map properties" brings up a box to edit the name.

MM folk - you may wish to edit Laura's instructions in the light of this? I'm sure it would be helpful to users.

Cheers,
David
