I have just got myself the new 2800 after having looked at the reviews and all looking good.
I have come upon a few issues and was wondering if anyone can throw some light on them.
Number one is watching the memory map promo vid for the 2800 it shows the red circle and red direction arrow very clearly. When I plan a route and use it the red arrow is all over the place shooting out and in every direction nothing like the promo vid !
I find it almost impossible to navigate with the unit. I am worried that all i have brought is an expensive compass
I have been using viewranger on my iPhone and its great. It looks the same as the promo vid for the 2800 and works great. Has anyone else had this problem, are there any settings that will improve the front screen.
My other issue is if i plan a route and overlay it on the GPS if the screen times out during a walk the overlay of the route vanishes and i have to go back into the settings and re set it up, again impossible to use out on a walk.
I love the look and feel of the unit but after only a week of using it i am already thinking of selling it as its just useless.

Any help would be much appreciated

Hi mrjplumbing,

I don,t think you'll get a response from memorymaps support network, they seem too pre-occupied with everything android/iphone/pc.

But i'll give you my take on your problems, with regards the red direction arrow....this is used to display your general walking direction and the arrow increases/decreases with your current speed... an example would be if walking/mtb fast the arrow extends.... if walking slow the arrow shortens, but i never use this for routes, its just there, i don't really take much interest in it.
For routes i use the two boxes that appear when activating follow route, these will be resizable info boxes that pop up on your map screen, myself personally, i get rid of the one info box by using its close button and just use the blue arrow direction pop-up box, this should give you what your looking for when following a preplanned route.... but be aware you must be moving for this to function.

Not really sure about your second point, are you saying that when the screen locks and you then unlock it the overlay data is missing, its been a while since i used the 2800, i now own the 3500..... but if i remember correctly there was an issue with the POWER DOWN TIME setting, this caused issues for some, i believe support stated to leave this setting as always on and stated it was never meant to be used for the unit, it was meant for the golfing app that can be purchased seperetely.
Now i'm sure i may have missed somthing, if so..... there are others who may just post to correct me.

Hi thanks just a bit more info:
I have just tried using the arrow in the pop up box and this too is all over the place. I put a new route in 5 mins ago just a short walk and at the start the arrow was pointing behind me so i turned around to the direction is was in and it moved back to behind me so i turn a quarter turn and it was still behind me ! i don't think that's right.
I am gutted as the compass marker on the view ranger ( iphone ) is superb but it kills the battery
I just feel very pissed off as the promo vid is miss selling this unit as i cant use it for what i want to use it for

Hi again mrjplumbing,

The major criteria using the route following direction arrow is to be moving at least at walking speed, there have been problems reported of erratic arrow movment on circular walks, although i experienced none myself both with the 2800 and 3500, with regards the fluctuation of the arrow, using a the route, can you not walk in its general direction too see if it settles, sometimes being near a waypoint upsets the direction arrow and it somtimes bounces about a bit.... but generally when passed normally points to your next waypoint.
Also bare in mind that the direction arrow may not point in the direction of the path your using, thats to say your path may deviate slightly left or right, but your waypoint maybe straight ahead, so the pointer will be straight ahead as well, also as you state the 2800 has no compass, so needs you to be moving to crunch the numbers.
I would perhaps put a longer route in with more spaced out waypoints and recheck again.

Yeah mrjplumbing. You have to walk a few yards to give it a chance to settle as johnmandy says.
