I have been trying to load a geocache location, I have just joined the above website site so I could be missing the obvious. Looking forward to your answers as my boy is chomping at the bit!

I'm interested in this as I Geocache also.
I do use my iphone for paperless caching, although I'm finding it irritating that I can't use the find function
to mark the spot while I'm using the pre-loaded Snowdonia map.
If that is your problem see the "find" thread I'm also watching with interest. I'm hoping someone can point me in right direction to fix this. I'm no techy and new to MM, it's something to do with .MMI files?

What file types do the geocashing.com website supply?
What happens if in Memory-Map on your PC you select OVERLAY > IMPORT > browse to the file and select OPEN?

Thanks

Zipped file containing .. .gpx I believe ... .LOC is mentioned but I don't know much about it really, I've just used it, if you know what I mean.

Styks,
Thanks for the info about the files but I wouldn't know where to start, any chance of step by step instructions on how you could transfer this to the 2800. Sadly this is one more thing that is missing from a maual which would make a good product a superb product.

I have managed to load Geocache points from Geocache.com in my 2800.

They are loc files which you can import into MM first then export from MM to the 2800 userdata folder. They then show up as a board rubber on my machine.

Found my first Geocache with it today.

Would have found more but missus wanted to get back for Snooker.

Wish there was a way of adding tons of Geocaches in one go.

There is a way.....

If you are a premium member at Geocaching.com you can create a 'pocket query' for up to 500 caches centred around a position during a google map browse. The resultant .loc (I think they were .loc) files are then emailed to you zipped up and can be easily imported into Memory Map as an overlay of the 500 caches. The overlay even includes a brief descriptive name for each cache.

I used to do it a lot with Memory Map and my trusty HTC TyTnII. I have not tried it with the latest MM version or the 2800 but I see no reason at all why it should'nt work.

A bit of a thread Hijack here...

I've been geocaching for a few years now. Recently my PDA which I used for geocaching broke. The Adventurer 2800 looks promising. My only reservation is there being no support for cache details. From reading various reviews and knowing MM works on a windows mobile PDA, is it possible to run other WinMob software to view cache details? The lack of cache details support may well be the killer that makes me choose a Garmin Dakota or Oregon.

To answer the original question :) , Geocaching gives you a GPX file if you're a premium member, which includes all the cache details and additional waypoints (if there are any). A LOC file gives you just the GC code and coordinates. You can get a GPX file containing up to 500 caches through a Pocket Query. From what I understand, you can load the GPX file into memory map on the PC and transfer the waypoints to your GPS (certainly can with Anquet).

I hope that helps and makes up for the hijack! And sorry for repeatedly mentioning the competition!

What details would you like to see?

Stuff I'd like to be able to see would be the text of the cache description, size/type, difficulty/terrain, the hint and child waypoints. Don't want much, do I? :o

Seriously, I'm not trying to make out the Adventurer is rubbish for missing this functionality. Just saying that it'd be perfect for me with it. With it, the decision would be made. Without it, I'd have to rely on something else for the details - plenty of stuff available for phones. So I'm undecided.
To get the equivalent mapping in a Garmin, I'd have to pay another £100+ on a unit costing about £50 less, so the memory map COULD be better value. Up to now I've used a program called Geoscout, which was effectively a cache database with a navigation/map side to it. Very good it was too. But a dedicated, proper GPS will be much more sensible, being more suited to use in the rain. I live in the Lake District, so being splashproof is useful. I have a feeling that the weather might have been the downfall of the PDA!

Basically, if it had full paperless caching functionality, there's a market out there. Unfortunately, Garmin do seem to have a rather big stranglehold on the market at the moment. Choice is good.
