I agree. This has been implemented in the Android version, a simple button in a pull-down menu to start or stop logging.
Another related feature which exists in the Android version is that the tracks are given unique names (T1, T2, ...) and in the index list for each overlay type (Marks, Routes, Tracks) each item is shown with its start date and time, distance covered and elapsed time. Like you I end up with many fragments of unwanted track which need to be deleted and sadly they are all called "Track". Like you I would like to see this stuff implemented on the 3500 and I doubt whether there is any reason for not doing it.
