*URL Removed - This is not a forum for advertising other companies - Thanks Jason*
snigger

I'd never heard of Viewranger until I came to this thread in advance of upgrading my phone to a Desire.

such a shame, I'm just glad I don't have shares in such an incompetent company.

this thread started in November 2009, 10 months ago. This graph neatly shows how other companies have responded

Actually that shows how many individuals and companies have created apps for Android. Apart from being meaningless anyway (given that there are tens or hundreds of millions of companies in the world, the numbers of apps for Android are tiny), and actually only a very small proportion of those apps in the figures you've quoted are developed by "established" companies like MM who are porting existing applications to Android.

Along with the fact that MM have already said they'ree working on an Android app, maybe what that really shows is that MM is a rather more complex app than the 90% of apps which basically do nothing.

Maybe, or maybe it shows just how unresponsive they are to their customers. There are far more posts and views on this thread than the rest of the wishlist topic put together, yet it took from November to July before they even responded and they haven't updated since. I don't know how good the competing products are, because I haven't used them, but somehow other mapping apps have been developed for all versions of iphone, Android and Symbian. Apps which use offline data and ones that use online data.

They've thrown away their market... jeez their website is still offering the exciting opportunity to "upgrade to the new V5 edition"!

The thing to remember is that MM are actually one of the few companies that have any visible staff support in forums anymore. Try emailing someone like Apple and ask if they're working on some new product - you'll hear nothing, ever. Same with most other companies, they simply don't have the supprt structures in place to answer that type of question. In some ways MM shoot themselves in the foot by answering some questions but not others, or by having a "wishlist" forum which is always going to get lots of requests.

And i agree, they're not as responsive as they could be. I'd still love a few minor updates and bugfixes for the iOS app - just enabling "sort" on the track list, or allowing me to disable a track rather than having to delete it and re-load it from a file - would make a huge difference to how i use MM on my iPad. But while it should take literally an hour max to implement each of those two suggestions in the code, nothing has happened since. Which is a shame. But at the same time, i guess that i recognise that this support forum is primarily for helping people who have specific problems with existing software, rather than to request new versions or new features, so can forgive them for that. But while i accept that i don't necessarily expect a response, i remain quietly disappointed that they haven't done what i consider to be easy fixes to an existing application.

Interestingly, i remember reading on here recently something about Ordnance Survey essentailly preventing MM from adding new features to their software due to the licensing agreements. I can't remember the details, and would be worth checking the details, but seem to remember they said they were working with OS to get more flexible agreements.

But that's exactly the point, it doesn't get a lot of requests. Every few days someone suggests something which no-one else picks up on. There are only two wishes that have shown any sort of resonance with multiple users: a port to the Mac and- much more popular- a port to Android. Not new features or functionality.

Anyway, I've said my bit. My upgrade will take place in about a month. If by then I'm still faced with the choice of carting around a device running ancient (and still awful) Windows Mobile just for when I need maps or buying some other mapping software, I think it's pretty obvious which way I'll go.

+1 - I've been struggling with Google maps on my HTC Hero (useless when out of coverage) and would love to use my maps from my old WinMob device.

My next phone will most likely be the Motorola Defy an IP67 rated android phone, perfect for use with mapping software in the outdoors. The obvious choice would be to use Memorymap but view ranger have a nice looking piece of software that may well tempt me away if nothiong is forthcoming from MM.

For those that dont know IP67 means waterproof for temporary immersion in water as well as protected against dust, not really suitable for swimming with but more than enough to handle UK hill walking weather.
