You can download 750km² for £25 using Digital Map Shop OS Explorer 1:25,000, 1,500km² for £50 or 3,500km² for £100.

However, how big exactly is 750km²? It would be very handy if one could just go to a map of the UK onscreen, mark out the area in which you were interested and be given a price for that area rather than having to pay out £25 only to be told that you need to spend another £25 to get the area you actually want.

I am aware that on past editions of Memory-Map, it was suggested that Snowdownia was Xkm², the Lake District was Ykm², etc. but what if you don't happen to want Snowdownia or the Lake District?

But to check any particular region, just create a closed boundary Route (as if for downloading), temporarily select the "Mode/Units" as Metric and look at the Route Properties. Divide the area in Hectares by 100 to give the number of square km. Simples....

It is a square about 27 km on a side, or about 17 miles on a side.

To get a different perspective, bring up a map and zoom all the way in (or out). Create a route that goes to all four corners of the screen and starts / stops at the same point. Now, right-click on the route and go to PROPERTIES. There is a field called AREA. This will show (depending on your setting for UNITS) either square kilometers or square miles. That will give you a visual idea of the area.

I'm a new user of the product, so I've no idea whether or not this is something that has changed since this question was posted, but I've found that with the current version (5.4.2, 1089) if I create an enclosed route and then use the right button menu to go to the Digital Map Shop, choose the desired map type (one that is activated in square kilometers) and click the Continue button then the dialog box that comes up tells me how big the area is (against 'Rights needed to complete this request:')
