I have migrated to a new Windows 7 machine. All has gone OK for all my OS maps. However I have a set of Maptech Nautical charts (BSB) which I have installed and registered on the new machine. If I try to update my map list with this directory MM just freezes and I have to crash out.

Also I used to have a non-OS version of MM which would allow me to import/calibrate scanned maps which then became visible in the OS version; how do I now do this please.

Thanks

This is caused by a security protocol within the Windows 7 operating system. Basically Windows 7 seems to restrict access to the progam files directory for an application once the application has been installed using a standard Windows Install Sheild.
The easiest way to rectify this is to

1.) Create a folder on the root of your C: drive and name it MARINE CHARTS
2.) Open Memory-Map and press MAP > MAP LIST > REFRESH MAP LIST
3.) Press the button MAP FOLDER and select the MARINE CHARTS folder that was freshly created

Now when you refresh your map list, the marine charts will import correctly.

This ability is now within the Memory-Map European Edition software which is for use by all users within the European region. To obtain this software version is available be pressing WEB > CHECK FOR UPDATES

Thanks

Hi Jason
Thanks for the reply. I'm not having any luck with this.
I have done as you suggested so created new folder and copied a couple of charts (.bsb and .CAP) across. Tried to refresh map list with only that folder and MM freezes.
Tried it with and without the 'encryption' subfolder.
Tried it with just a .CAP and just a .bsb (as well as both).
Tried giving everyone and everything full access to the new folder.
Tried several different charts in case of corruption.
Tried creating the new folder on a removeable drive.
Tried opening the .CAP and the .bsb using MM (came up with unrecognised file type).
Errrrm... Can't think of anything else....

I have the latest version of MM (5.4.2 Build 1089).

The only way I have managed to get access to some of the charts is to copy the .qct back from my PDA.

Any more thoughts?

Thanks
Alan

Hi Alan,

Are you sure you've done Jason's 3.) correctly? You must press the "Map Folder" button at the bottom of the window (after "Folder containing loaded maps") and browse to the new folder you've created, then OK. That is where the MM program writes the converted maps, in general you should not put map files in that folder.

Cheers, Alan.

Alan, you make me blush with embarassment, I assumed Jason meant that MM couldn't get access to the chart files. Thanks for putting me right.
I still can't load the charts but I am now getting a licensing/encryption error so I'm going to try re-re-installing the charts.

Out of interest, the MAP FOLDER never seems to have anything in it, even when I load all the OS, imported and own scan maps (which is successful). When I originally re-installed and ran MM the MAP FOLDER that it was pointing to didn't even exist but it had no effect on the program operation. What is the MAP FOLDER and what is supposed to be in it?

I'll report later.
Many thanks
Alan

OK, back again.
I've re-installed and registered the charts using the original registration program.
MM comes up with an error about missing chart certificate.
Went onto Maptech site and they have a different registration program for Vista/XP so I downloaded and ran that.
MM still comes up with the same error.

I'm guessing that the registration process is failing. I think I may need a registration program for Win 7.

Any ideas Jason?

Thanks
Alan

alahol2,

You best bet would be to contact Maptech themselves via support@maptechnavigation.com as they should be able to help you with the .BSB chart registration.
Basically it looks like the issue here is that Memory-MAp is unable to see the .KAP licence file for each chart.

You could try setting Memory-Map into compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 to see if that helps.

Thanks

Thanks Jason
I emailed Maptech last night, awaiting a reply.

2 questions please
Where should I see the .KAP file(s)?
and from my earlier post...
Out of interest, the MAP FOLDER never seems to have anything in it, even when I load all the OS, imported and own scan maps (which is successful). When I originally re-installed (on Win 7) and ran MM the (default) MAP FOLDER that it was pointing to didn't even exist but it had no effect on the program operation. What is the MAP FOLDER and what is supposed to be in it?

Incidentally, the default MAP FOLDER location can't exist on Windows 7 because the directory structure is different, maybe that is the real reason for the problem you originally thought I had?

Cheers
Alan

If you load a map that is not in our format (QCT - QuickChart), the program creates a QCT "version" of the map in the folder designated by the Map Folder button. (Example - If I load a TIFF / TFW file pair named MAP1 to the program, it creates a MAP1.qct file in that folder which is what is actually displayed in the program.)

Thanks for that
I must have copied the .qct files for my own scanned maps out of the original Map Folder and into a subdirectory of Maps_v5 on my old machine.

I had a reply from Maptech and they are (reluctantly because the charts are not the latest) going to give me a way of re-registering them in Windows 7.

Thanks for everyones help
Alan

Oh dear, going round in circles here...

All Maptech have done is emailed the Product ID and Activation codes, which I already had.
Their registration program creates an 'ENCRYPTION' folder containing a couple of DLL's and a subdirectory '00003224' which contains a text file '00003224' containing the Product ID, Activation codes etc. It does not appear to create any .KAP files.

When trying to open with MM I get the error dialog: 'KAP ERROR' 'MT_GetHeaderAndOpen("D:\..........BA0002.CAP") Failed: The chart certificate is missing.'

So, should the Maptech registration program be creating .KAP files? If so where?
OR
Should MM be looking for the .CET file rather than .KAP files? ( I did try renaming the .CET as .KAP but it made no difference).

Any ideas please?
Cheers
Alan
