The Product Guide provided for my Memory Maps (V5) says that I can Check Smartphone Compatibility at the Memory Map Website. Where? Is there a list of Compatible Phones available? I can't afford any of these new iPhones I'm afraid, but there are I see loads of much, much cheaper handsets available with GPS now added to their general description.

Hi Ian,

Basically, any Windows Mobile phones and PDAs up to about version 6.1. However, IMHO the functionality on non-touchscreen phones is very disappointing.

WM v6.5+ appears to have some problems (which MM might be able to fix) and Windows Phone 7 is not compatible (and AFAIK MM have not made any commitment to support).

An Android version is said to be being developed but is not available yet.

You don't actually need a built-in GPS, an external BlueTooth GPS can be used (and IMHO may work better).

Cheers, Alan.

Hi Alan
Thanks for the info - much appreciated! I shall attempt to look for a Windows Phone running 6.1 or earlier.

I wonder if Memory Map will now upgrade to cover Windows 7, since Nokia have teamed up with Microsoft. I've given up looking for a 6.1 phone, makes me brain hurt. Might be easier if I could search the web better, but everything I try fails to provide a satisfactory answer. Too old, tis my excuse anyway!! Sometimes tis best to stay with what ya know - and at least my old phone still works.

Hi,

MM previously said that they might support Windows Phone 7 but several months ago said that they will be supporting Android (but there's no sign of that app. yet). However, WP7 is so different to WM6 (e.g. memory cards are not hot swapable, if supported at all) that I certainly wouldn't hold my breath.

If you need a new PDA/Phone take a look at the TotalPDA website where they may have some worthwhile "obsolete" devices at reasonable prices (but note that VAT is not included :( ).

Cheers, Alan.

For those interested I recently mailed for an update on Android Compatibility. No sooner than this Autumn was the reply from Tech Support.
