I've just been to Spain, walking holiday. It was in an area for which there are no Memory Maps available. However, I was hoping that Memory Map would plot where I had been walking and I could then build up my own map of the paths and tracks around where we were staying. I found that indeed I could build up the tracks, but I couldn't zoom in to see them on a useful scale - nothing less than about 50 miles across my iPhone screen so there was just a jumble of scribbles on a small part of the screen.

Was I doing something wrong, or did I just fail to find the way to zoom the display?

In order for the app to track, it had to have some map loaded. Even if you couldn't see it, some map was loaded. (Most likely a basemap.) The DMS Europe Road Atlas should provide coverage of that whole area and give you roughly five miles across the screen when zoomed in.

Thanks. Just found your reply, having just uploaded a repeat of the question - sorry!

This is rather unsatisfactory. My old Garmin walker's satnav didn't need maps - couldn't have maps - but it still gave a decent plot of where I had been. I think the area shown on the Memory Map iPhone screen is much more than 5 miles, but in any case, it won't let me zoom in any smaller. Perhaps I'm wrong to be thinking of Memory Map as a potential solution to my problem. Perhaps there is another app which does tracks without needing a map. I must go and look for it but any pointers would be very useful. It's a pity, because the Memory Map tracks are very clear, colourable etc. but it seems they only exist as an adjunct of a map.
