Hi,
is it possible to store my maps and run them from an external usb drive?

I am using a Toughbook and Garmin while mobile and the Toughbook doesn't have the biggest memory available so I would like to load my maps on a flash drive. I have got as far as knowing that I would need to copy the QCT, MMI and QED files to the flash drive and point memory map to the correct location but have encountered some crashes while trying to refresh the map list etc.

This may have been a dodgy flash drive causing the problem but before loading to a new top quality flash drive can anyone confirm that there isn't something I'm missing in this simple laymans way of going about it?

Also, will memory map save copies to the hard drive after closing the map which I want to avoid?

Many thanks!

This should work fine. It could be the data transfer speed on the given drive that is the issue.

Thanks, a positive reply from such a prolific poster has given me enough confidence to start loading the maps!

I think the previous flash drive was rubbish so I've just bought a sandisk cruzer for my next try.

Will I need to "delete previously loaded maps" to ensure I'm not filling my hard drive or does MM just save a very small part?

jonkem,

The Memory-Map application should not 'save' map files to the internal hard drive if it is reading them from an external drive.
It will load them into memory but only whilst the map is in use.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies and MM has just completed a 3500 mile journey and performed faultlessly :-)

Now all I need is some digital mapping for Spain!
