I've got a problem that has only just recently (about a week ago) started to occur with my Memory-Map software on the PC.

Whenever I change maps, I used to get the new map displayed immediately -- well, sometimes with a short (<1sec) delay as it loaded the file, and sometimes, if I was switching to the street-view, it would have to download extra tiles which obviously took a bit longer: but even in this case I could continue using the software while the map drew itself. Since about a week ago, whenever I change maps there is a twenty-second "freeze" during which nothing at all happens, then the new map displays. During this "freeze", if I attempt to use the software, Windows says "this program is not responding". We've run system-explorer software, and noticed that during the "freeze" Memory-Map appears to be doing nothing: no cpu, no I/O, no nothing. The same twenty-second "freeze" also happens when I first start up Memory-Map, after the splash screen disappears, before the first map gets displayed. As you can imagine, this has rapidly become annoying!

Any idea what causes this? Is it something I did? (I think I first saw it just after downloading some new maps from DMS, but I'm not sure whether that's relevant). I have tried re-installing the Memory-Map software, and re-loading the map list, both to no effect.

I have Memory-Map European Edition version 5.4.2 Build 1089.

valpike,

I have only seen this issue once, in all the time that I’ve used 5.4.2 on Windows 7.
The way I rectified this was a complete uninstall of the Memory-Map software and mapping, and then a full re-install.

To perform a complete uninstall please perform the following....

• Click Start and then Control Panel
• If in ‘Control Panel Home’ view click Uninstall a program. If in ‘Classic View’ double-click on Programs and Features.
• Locate ‘Memory-Map OS Edition Version 5’ in the list and then click Uninstall on the menu above and then Yes to confirm. If a message appears requesting permission for an unknown program to run, type your Admin password if required and click OK.
• When this finishes, close all open windows.

• Click on Start, then All Programs, then Accessories and then Windows Explorer.
• On the left hand side of the screen, locate ‘Computer’, then C: drive, then click on the Program Files folder. In the window on the right-hand side locate the Memory-Map folder if present and delete it.
• If prompted about removing files, answer Yes. If User Account Control asks for your permission to delete files choose Yes or Allow.
• Close any open windows.

• In your My Documents folder remove the folder labeled Map Overlays, if present.

• Next, Click on Start, and then in the Start Search box type regedit and then press return. If you have User Account Control turned on click Continue to grant permission to Windows. This will open the Registry Editor.

Be careful to only delete the items listed below, deleting other items could cause bad effects for the system.

On the left hand side of the screen, locate the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder and hit the arrow to its left.
Now locate the Software folder and click on the arrow to its left.
Now locate the Memory-Map folder, click once on it to highlight it, then click Edit on the menu bar and select
Delete. If you do not find the Memory-Map folder, don't worry, we just want to make sure it’s not there.
Click the arrow next to Software and then the arrow next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER

On the left hand side of the screen, locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder and hit the arrow to its left.
Now locate the Software folder and click arrow to its left.
Now locate the Memory-Map folder, click once on it to highlight it, then click Edit on the menu bar and select
Delete. Once again, if you do not find the Memory-Map folder, don't worry, we just need to make sure it’s not there.

Close the Registry Editor. The Memory-Map software has now been removed from you PC.
Now go to the folder on your PC that the maps are stored (the default for this is C:\MAPS_V5) and delete the entire folder.

Thanks

Thanks -- I will give this a try. Before I do, can you tell me how to get back working again AFTER doing this? I will need to re-establish all my maps, and all my overlays.

* The fixed maps are easy (eg, national parks 1:50k) -- I can restore those from CD.

* I have quite a lot of DMS mapping -- how do I get that back? Can I make a list somehow of what I've got, to re-fetch it afterwards?

* What should I do with my overlays -- can I export them somehow into a file which I can re-import afterwards?

Thanks.

You could copy the MAP OVERLAYS folder (or at least the MMO files in it) and the C:\MAPS_V5 folder (which contains your maps) to another location and then restore, but if one of these is the problem, you would only be re-introducing the issue. You could restore one or the other to see if the problem returns.

Thanks. I backed these two folders up carefully before starting. In fact, I then tried deleting them, and reinstating just two maps (1:1M and 1:250k OS), and the problem was still happening as before. I then followed all the steps above, and the fresh install worked fine. The c:\Program Files\Memory Map folder had gone during the uninstall, but HKCU\Software\Memory-Map was still in the registry with tons of keys and values in it. As reinstalling the software hadn't fixed it, and emptying the maps and overlays folder didn't fix it, I think it must have been registry values that were the culprits somehow.

I then reintroduced the maps and overlays, and it continues to work fine --- it is now working exactly as it was a few weeks ago, with all my maps and overlays and instantaneous switching between maps. Many thanks!

I've just been hit with an identical problem. It is identical in every way. I'm now bracing myself to go through this procedure. It sounds drastic. I can't tell what triggered the problem; I use M-M a lot, creating routes, storing tracks from my 3500, buying and activating stuff from DMS etc and it has just started misbehaving today. Grrrrrr!

I appreciate Jason's instructions and Valpike's feedback.

I can happily confirm that by following the above procedures and Valpike's advice the problem can be fixed.

Like Valpike I backed up the entire folders c:\Maps_v5 and \My Documents\Map Overlays before proceding but after reinstalling I reinstated these two folders exactly as they were, so I too am left thinking that it must have been the registry contents which were dodgey. I don't know if there is some procedure for deleting and then regenerating the Memory-Map registry keys without going through a full reinstallation.

On attempting to reinstall the application I was visited by that other old favourite; the installer launched an installation of Bing Maps. I followed advice from the relevant forum topic by deleting all temporary files and restarted the PC but that achieved nothing so I ended up reinstalling from the MSI installer off the CD which came with my Adv3500.

But after all that, the response now when I switch to maps of larger and smaller scales is completely instantaneous. Good result.

Hi guys,

I too have suffered with this same 'freeze' period between changing map scales. A few missing tiles at a specific zoom was a symptom too. These same tiles were visible at any other zoom level.

Jason's full re-install did sort it out and it's a lot easier to do than it is to read! However I hope I don't have to do it too often.

You're not alone....

AndyB had the same problem.

Mark_H describes it too....

Thanks Jason and valpike. Like geoffmoss and courtt, after the clear out and reinstall I just reinstated the entire 2 folders and no grey blocks. No great problem to do it but it surely must be the registry causing problems.
I did have a file in overlays called "ww_routes.mmo" which seems to have a lot of example graded routes possibly brought in from Trailzilla when I registered but also all my own ones as well. That is a much larger file which I have not put back in overlays yet.

This problem has just re-occurred with my setup for the second time in just a few months. I have done a re-install once already.

It's definitely not connected with my maps. They've remained unchanged since I first had Mem Map.

I tend to use Memory Map with very few overlays. I keep all my overlay data in a separate folder and import as required. Keeping overlay info within Memory Map definitely slow things down in use.

As I've not yet seen a solution (other than a complete uninstall and clean re-install of memory Map) I'm coming to the conclusion that this is an unresolved bug.

Cheers

Geoff
