Hi all

Why are memory map overlay files version dependant, memory map overlays created with later versions cannot be opened by earlier versions BUT can be by imported as a CSV, which does not make sense.

It would be so much simpler if the .MMO could be opened by all versions, imagine if early versions of photoshop could not open files created by the latest version !

thanks Roy

Backward compatibility (ie, opening an older file in a newer version of the program) can be programmed in, but in general forward compatibility cannot - it would imply that that the developers already know about every possible future change to the program before they start, which is just not reasonable.

This certainly applies to other software too - you can't open an MS Word 2010 .docx file in MS Word 2003, and to follow up on your own example, only last week I had a collection of .psd files that I couldn't open in Photoshop CS2 because they were created in Photoshop CS5.

Hi,

You mean the way early versions of MS Office can open (I think not) .DOCX files created by Office 2007 ? ;) Ah, Richard beat me to it. :)

As far as the change in .MMO file format from MM 2004 to v5 is concerned, v5 included new features such as line styles which were not supported in MM 2004, nor the .CSV file format. So I think you lose any line styles you may have set if you use the .CSV format.

But as far as the incompatibility between v5.1.3 and v5.4.x is concerned, it might be something to do with the new .QC3 map file format, but I suspect it was intended to "encourage" users to abandon earlier software versions and accept the new License Management system.

Cheers, Alan.
