Hello all,

Are there any mariners out there that can advise.... are there any digital nautical charts available that can be imported reasonably easily into Memory Map on the PC.

A non-techie, nautical friend of mine would like to put Greek coastal charts on his iPhone to use with the iPhone Memory Map app. He intends sailing around the Greek coastline. Memory Map does not produce Greek marine charts.

I see that Memory Map will import other digital formats other than the proprietary qct and qc3 file types.

My thoughts.....
Are there suitable nautical digital charts available?
If so what format works best for Memory Map?
Will the charts need registering after importing?

You get the drift....

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers

Geoff

The only ones I've found are from 1yachtua.com but they're not very accurate. You will need to calibrate them in Memory Map using the corner co-ordinates and ideally a number of other points (eg headlands). If you want something more accurate for the iPhone you could try the Imray or Navionics apps but I don't find them as easy to use as Memory Map.

Whichever you go for you could only really use them to get a general idea of where you are, log and review tracks etc but they will not in any way substitute for a proper chart or a purpose built marine GPS.

Also bear in mind that the iPhone doesn't like water, so it will need to be in a waterproof case, which could affect screen visibility.

All noted thanks.

I was hoping that proper accurate charts were available in digital format....
