What is GPS?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the US government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.

Which GPS Solution do you need? There are many different types of GPS devices on the market.

Adventurer 2800
For
  • Low cost, robust, easy to use, some models weather or waterproof, wide range to choose from.
  • Many newer models can display full colour topographic maps* and use high resolution touchscreens.
  • See your position, track and planned route in full colour, on a real map, in the palm of your hand.
 
Against
  • Many units have no map display or a very limited base map.
  • Normally only be used as a GPS device.

*additional maps normally sold separately. Memory-Map maps can only be loaded onto Memory-Map Adventurer GPS devices. Other GPS manufacturers may produce their own maps compatible with their own units and Memory-Map can be used as a map printing and route planning tool with routes uploadable and downloadble to the majority of handheld GPS devices.

PC, Notebook or Laptop
For With GPS data supplied and navigation software installed, a PC is the most powerful option but has obvious limitations. Best suited to planning, printing and programming detailed routes into a handheld GPS.
Against As a moving map display with real time GPS positioning it's really only suitable on a larger vehicle like a boat or plane.
Memory-Map Recommends

Any PC that meets the Memory-Map System Requirements. A GPS signal can be fed via a cable from a handheld GPS or a specialist USB or Bluetooth GPS unit.

  • Not very robust but can be improved with waterproof or rugged case
  • Battery life can be very short and would leave user without means of emergency communication if being used as primary navigation device.
  • Purchase and download of maps when not using a WiFi connection can incur additional data charges depending on usage and your phone contract - always check with your provider before downloading any mapping.
  • If using for aviation navigation please note that putting your iPhone into Flight Mode will disable the GPS receiver and therefore disable the realtime positioning feature of the App.

  • iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 or iPad
  • Can be used on iPod Touch as a map viewer but does not have a built in GPS receiver for realtime positioning.
