   >> GENERAL
The Licence Key supplied does not work?
Carefully check that you have typed the Licenced User Name, Serial Number and Licence Key exactly as provided.

Tip: All 0's are zeros not alpha character O's

If you've used a Trial CD or web download, make sure that you have remembered to replace the "Trial" serial number and re-registered your software to obtain a new licence key after purchasing Memory-Map.
Does Memory-Map Pocket Navigator run on the Palm / Visor / Handspring / iQue PDA?
Not at present. We do have plans to support PalmOS devices in the future.
Can I use this software on a Mac?
The software (including Pocket Navigator) is not designed to work on a Mac system. However, some users have reported success when using PC emulation software such as Virtual PC.
3D View does not work on my computer
Make sure you have DirectX 9.0b or later installed on your PC. This is included on your Memory-Map CD or available for download from www.microsoft.com/directx If your PC uses Windows 98 or Me you need to upgrade to Windows XP or install a graphics card that supports Microsoft DirectX 9.0b or later. Contact your PC vendor for advice on XP upgrades or compatible graphics cards for your PC.
My GPS position or tracks are always about 100m out?
Check that your GPS has been set to WGS84. This is the world standard for digital maps. This will normally be found in your GPS device Set-up menu.
I've lost my serial number and licence key details
Call Memory-Map or complete the Technical Support enquiry form to obtain a copy of your licence details.
When I swap CDs I can only see the list of maps from the first CD and not the new one?

When you swap CDs you need to tell Memory-Map to re-build the list of maps. To do this simply click the Map button, then select Refresh Map List. Make sure your CD drive is in the list and click OK.

Tip: If you have space on your hard drive you can copy the contents of your CDs to save swapping and re-registering the map list.

I can't print because the Print commands are greyed out?
Memory-Map Navigator, Memory-Map Discoverer and Memory-Map Street Atlas support full colour high resolution printing. Memory-Map Pocket Navigator does not support printing as standard but can simply be upgraded by phone or Internet to Memory-Map Navigator.

Call Memory-Map or buy an upgrade on-line.

  >> PC
What PC system requirements do I need to use Memory-Map?

Maps can be used from the CD or your PC Hard drive.Minimum System Requirements: Microsoft Windows XP, 2000, NT, ME, 98. 64Mb RAM, 100Mb hard-disk space. Minimum PC screen resolution 800 x 600.

3D VIEW requires support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0b or later which on Windows 98 or ME may require an additional graphics card - you can test Memory-Map 3D-View with the Free Trial download to check compatibility.

What sort of printer produces the best maps?
Memory-Map software can print to black and white or colour printers. The final print quality will depend on your printers' resolution and the type of paper used. Good results can be obtained from the latest generation of low cost colour photo quality inkjet printers.
Can I copy maps to my hard drive instead of using them from the CD?

Yes. Click the Map button then select Refresh Map List. Make sure your CD drive is listed, and tick the Load all maps now option. Click OK.

This will copy all the data on the disk to the default location Program Files / Memory-Map / Navigator / qct or you can create a specific folder on your hard drive. Memory-Map 2004 OS Editions automatically suggest maps are copied to a folder named c:\maps on your PC hard drive.

Any Pocket PC that uses the Microsoft "Pocket PC", "Pocket PC 2002" or "Windows Mobile 2003".

Including:

HP / Compaq iPAQ (all models)
Casio EM500, E115, E125, E200

NEC MobilePro
O2 XDA
Viewsonic V35

For information on the latest Pocket PCs, please refer to www.microsoft.com/pocketpc

How much memory does my Pocket PC need?
It is possible to run Memory-Map in 16Mb devices. If you need to store more maps then an additional storage device such as a Compact Flash card, SD or Micro Drive is recommended. You can buy your extra memory direct from Memory-Map.
Is there a faster way to send maps to the Pocket PC?

If you are using a serial ActiveSync connection try upgrading to USB - this provides a much faster connection.

If you're already using USB then try copying the maps using Windows Explorer as this can sometimes be faster than using the Memory Map Send Map to PDA command.

Tip: If you click on Explore in Microsoft ActiveSync you can simply drag and drop tiles between your PC and Pocket PC.

If you're using an additional storage card (such as Compact Flash) it's about 100 times faster using a dedicated USB Card Reader than your Pocket PC's built in card slot. These are available from most good PC shops - as well as most good camera shops - or buy direct from Memory-Map.

How can I connect a handheld GPS to my Pocket PC?

See the new Memory-Map interGPS cable range. This provides a fast and easy way to connect your GPS to your Pocket PC.

What is the difference / connection between Maptech Pocket Navigator and Memory-Map's products?

Memory-Map develops and maintains Maptech's Pocket Navigator product, and the software is nearly identical. Some differences are:

» Memory-Map Navigator supports printing, and has the GPS interface on the Windows PC as well as on the PDA.

» Memory-Map Navigator supports some additional charts and maps.

» Memory-Map Navigator provides telephone hotline support. Maptech provides support through its dealers or by email only.

  >> GPS
Which GPS models can I use with Memory-Map?

Memory-Map supports both Garmin and Magellan protocols for the transfer of waypoints, routes and track logs. Any GPS can be used for real-time positioning using the standard NMEA 0183 protocol or SiRF protocol. Support is also provided for the Navman range including the HP iPAQ GPS sleeve.

For more information and recommended units see the GPS section.

Where can I get a cable to connect my GPS?

Most GPS manufacturers produce standard PC interface cables. See our Cables section or contact your GPS supplier.

Help with Pocket PC GPS cables.

My GPS position sometimes disappears?
To correctly calculate your position your GPS receiver needs to 'see' at least 4 satellites. Most modern GPS receivers can use up to 12 satellites at a time. Satellite 'visibility' can be affected by atmospheric and topographical conditions including tall buildings, steep crevices and dense foliage. If Memory-Map displays the GPS Warning' message this means your GPS is sending an invalid position - try moving slightly or re-positioning your receiver.
I can't connect my GPS to Memory-Map?
Check the Memory-Map help files on your PC or click here for instructions on how to correctly connect a GPS and how to test the connection.
I'm using a CompactFlash or PCMCIA card GPS on an iPAQ and get an 'Unable to open COM port' message?
Try changing the GPS settings in Pocket Navigator to COM4 rather than COM2.
Can I use the Navman GPS range of iPAQ sleeves with Memory-Map?

Yes. You will need to have Memory-Map v2.5.6 or later. If you have not already installed a Navman driver, then you will need to install the Memory-Map Navman GPS3000 driver which is available on all Memory-Map product CDs in a folder called GPS Drivers, or click here to download.

Note: If Memory-Map Pocket Navigator displays the GPS status 'No Signal' then the software is working correctly but the Navman GPS has not yet located it's current position. You can follow the satellite acquisition by selecting Menu > GPS> Satellites. When the bars turn green, a position may be obtained. For more information read the following installation instructions;

Navman GPS 3000 Installation Instructions (Memory-Map only)
Navman GPS 3000 Installation Instructions (Memory-Map and Smartpath)
How do I set up my Garmin / Magellan GPS to communicate with Memory-Map?

The software is able to communicate with GPS units made by Garmin and Magellan, and supports the standard NMEA 0813 output from most other GPS manufacturers.

Unlike the basic NMEA 0183 interface, communication with Garmin and Magellan devices can be set to a bi-directional interface allowing Memory-Map software to upload and download; waypoints, routes and track logs to and from the GPS, as well as plot your current position.

GARMIN

  • To set up the Garmin interface, first put the GPS in Garmin mode: Setup menu > Interface > 'GRMN/GRMN' (On some devices this is listed as 'Garmin').
  • Next set Memory-Map to Garmin, click on GPS > GPS Setup, and select Garmin in the manufacturer field. The only other setting you need to make is to select the COM port number you are using.

MAGELLAN

  • To set up the Magellan interface, first set the GPS to the Magellan protocol: Setup menu > Setup> NMEA > V2.1 GSA.
  • Next set Memory-Map to Magellan, click on GPS > GPS Setup, and select Garmin in the manufacturer field. The only other setting you need to make is to select the COM port number you are using.
Why does my GPS show truncated waypoint names?

We have put in this restriction due to some Garmin GPS units not supporting the 10-char waypoint names. It is possible to abbreviate the waypoint names or edit them once they are transferred to the Garmin.

I am using a USB GPS connection. How do I know which COM port to choose in Memory-Map?

All USB GPS's and serial/USB adaptor cables require diver software to allocate a virtual com port to the device. Often the question is what number com port has been allocated. This may be discovered in Windows Device Manager, the path to which is; Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager. Find the Ports icon and expand the content list to reveal as in the example below that Com 6 has been allocated.

Can I upgrade my Memory-Map Navigator or Discoverer OS Edition to the new Memory-Map 2004 with the FREE download?
No, Ordnance Survey licence restrictions mean that the new MM2004 range can not work with any current MM2003 or MM2002 OS maps. An upgrade is available for existing users to purchase the new MM2004 range. This will provide new 2004 Edition Ordnance Survey maps as well as all the new Memory-Map 2004 features including 3D View.
Can I use my Memory-Map Aerial Photos, Aviation Charts, Marine Charts or other maps with the new Memory-Map 2004 Ordnance Survey product?
Yes, other maps can be used as normal with the new features in Memory-Map 2004 but please note that 3D-View requires maps with digital terrain. Digital Terrain is provided as standard on all Memory-Map 2004 Ordnance Survey Editions.
Can I use routes and marks from my previous Memory-Map software in the new version?
Yes, simply use the Overlay, Export commands in your previous version to save your data and then the Overlay, Import commands in the new version.
Can the maps be used in other software?
Memory-Map Cartography is supplied in the unique QuickChart file format which makes the map much faster to zoom and scroll. The QuickChart file format is only supported by Memory-Map software. It is not possible to export the maps.
What maps are available?

A range of Memory-Map Cartography is available as well as maps from many other suppliers.
