How
much memory does my Pocket PC need? |
| |
It
is possible to run Memory-Map in 16Mb devices. If you
need to store more maps then an additional storage device
such as a Compact Flash card, SD or Micro Drive is recommended.
You
can buy your extra memory direct from Memory-Map. |
|
|
|
|
Is
there a faster way to send maps to the Pocket PC? |
| |
If
you are using a serial ActiveSync connection try upgrading
to USB - this provides a much faster connection.
If
you're already using USB then try copying the maps using
Windows Explorer as this can sometimes be faster than
using the Memory Map Send Map
to PDA command.
Tip:
If you click on Explore in Microsoft ActiveSync you
can simply drag and drop tiles between your PC and Pocket
PC.
If
you're using an additional storage card (such as Compact
Flash) it's about 100 times faster using a dedicated
USB Card Reader than your Pocket PC's built in card
slot. These are available from most good PC shops -
as well as most good camera shops - or buy
direct from Memory-Map.

Which
GPS models can I use with Memory-Map? |
|
|
Memory-Map
supports both Garmin and Magellan protocols for the transfer
of waypoints, routes and track logs. Any GPS can be used
for real-time positioning using the standard NMEA 0183
protocol or SiRF protocol. Support is also provided for
the Navman range including the HP iPAQ GPS sleeve.
For
more information and recommended units see the GPS
section.

My
GPS position sometimes disappears? |
|
|
To
correctly calculate your position your GPS receiver needs to
'see' at least 4 satellites. Most modern GPS receivers can use
up to 12 satellites at a time. Satellite 'visibility' can be
affected by atmospheric and topographical conditions including
tall buildings, steep crevices and dense foliage. If Memory-Map
displays the GPS Warning' message this means your GPS is sending
an invalid position - try moving slightly or re-positioning
your receiver. |

I'm
using a CompactFlash or PCMCIA card GPS on an iPAQ and get an
'Unable to open COM port' message? |
|
|
Try
changing the GPS settings in Pocket Navigator to COM4 rather
than COM2. |
|
|
Can
I use the Navman GPS range of iPAQ sleeves with Memory-Map? |
|
|
Yes.
You will need to have Memory-Map v2.5.6 or later. If you
have
not already installed a Navman driver, then you will need
to install the Memory-Map
Navman GPS3000 driver which is available on all Memory-Map product CDs in a folder called GPS Drivers, or click
here to download.
Note:
If Memory-Map Pocket Navigator displays the GPS status 'No
Signal' then the software is working correctly but the Navman
GPS has not yet located it's current position. You can follow
the satellite acquisition by selecting Menu
> GPS> Satellites. When the bars turn green,
a position may be obtained. For more information read the
following installation instructions;

How
do I set up my Garmin / Magellan GPS to communicate with Memory-Map? |
| |
The
software is able to communicate with GPS units made by Garmin
and Magellan, and supports the standard NMEA 0813 output from
most other GPS manufacturers.
Unlike
the basic NMEA 0183 interface, communication with Garmin and
Magellan devices can be set to a bi-directional interface
allowing Memory-Map software to upload and download; waypoints,
routes and track logs to and from the GPS, as well as plot
your current position.
GARMIN
- To
set up the Garmin interface, first put the GPS in Garmin
mode: Setup menu > Interface >
'GRMN/GRMN' (On some devices this is listed as 'Garmin').
- Next
set Memory-Map to Garmin, click on GPS
> GPS Setup, and select Garmin
in the manufacturer field. The only other setting you need
to make is to select the COM port
number you are using.
MAGELLAN
- To
set up the Magellan interface, first set the GPS to the
Magellan protocol: Setup menu >
Setup> NMEA > V2.1 GSA.
- Next
set Memory-Map to Magellan, click on GPS
> GPS Setup, and select Garmin
in the manufacturer field. The only other setting you need
to make is to select the COM port
number you are using.

|
Why
does my GPS show truncated waypoint names? |
| |
We
have put in this restriction due to some Garmin GPS units
not supporting the 10-char waypoint names. It is possible to abbreviate the waypoint names or
edit them once they are transferred to the Garmin.
|
 |
|
I
am using a USB GPS connection. How do I know which COM port
to choose in Memory-Map? |
| |
All USB GPS's and serial/USB adaptor cables require diver software to allocate a virtual com port to the device. Often the question is what number com port has been allocated. This may be discovered in Windows Device Manager, the path to which is; Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager. Find the Ports icon and expand the content list to reveal as in the example below that Com 6 has been allocated.
