The
Licence Key supplied does not work? |
| |
Carefully
check that you have typed the Licenced
User Name, Serial Number and Licence
Key exactly as provided.
Tip: All
0's are zeros not alpha character O's
If you've used a Trial CD or web download,
make sure that you have remembered to
replace the "Trial" serial
number and re-registered your software
to obtain a new licence key after purchasing
Memory-Map.
if you are using Memory-Map v5.2.7 or
above then this has a new licence system.
Both new and existing users will need
to create a new account in the software
before they can activate GPS and printing
features. |

Palm PDAs? |
| |
Memory-Map
will not work on Palm PDAs or devices. |
|
|
|
Can
I use this software on a Mac? |
| |
The
software (including Pocket Navigator)
is not designed to work on a Mac system.
However, some users have reported success
when using PC emulation software such
as Virtual PC. |
|
|
|
3D
World does not work on my computer |
| |
Make
sure you have DirectX 9.0c or later
installed on your PC. This is included
on your Memory-Map CD or available for
download from www.microsoft.com/directx.
Also make sure that you are using the
latest drivers for your graphics card,
which will be available from your graphics
card or PC manufacturer's website.
If you have done this and 3D World still
does not work then the graphics hardware
in your PC may not be suitable. Upgrading
your graphics hardware may help. Your
local PC supplier should be able to
help with this. |

Check
that your GPS has been set to WGS84.
This is the world standard for digital
maps. This will normally be found in
your GPS device Set-up menu. |

When
I install new CDs I can only see the
list of maps from the first CD I installed? |
| |
When
you install new maps to the hard drive
you need to tell Memory-Map to re-build
the list of maps. To do this simply
click the Map
button, then select Refresh
Map List. Make sure the folder
containing your maps (C:\Maps_v5 for
OS V5 products) is listed and click
OK.

I
can't print because the Print commands
are greyed out? |
| |
Make
sure your software is properly licenced
first before printing. Memory-Map Navigator,
Memory-Map Discoverer and Memory-Map
Street Atlas support full colour high
resolution printing. Memory-Map Pocket
Navigator does not support printing
as standard but can simply be upgraded
by phone or Internet to Memory-Map Navigator.
Call Memory-Map or buy
an upgrade on-line. |
|
|
|
|
When
installing maps from the CD I get a
cyclic redundancy check or CRC error
message |
| |
Unfortunately
there is a problem with the CD itself
you are using. Try cleaning the disc
itself and then contact Memory-Map
to obtain a replacement.
|
|
|
|
|
When
refreshing my map list I get a 'PNG
color type must be PALETTE' error message |
| |
This
warning message is displayed because
Memory-Map is currently set to scan
across your hard drive for maps rather
than just the folders that contain maps.
This means that it will pick up images
that may be maps but are not in the
correct format.
To
correct the click the menu option
Map > Map List and then the Refresh
Map List button. In the white box
make sure only folders that contain
maps are listed and not anything else,
such as C: or D: If they are use the
Remove Folder button to delete from
the list.
The
default locations for maps are either
C:\Maps or C:\Maps_v5
Make
sure the bottom two tick boxes - Search
sub-folders and Clear all previously
loaded maps are ticked and then click
OK and your map list will be updated
and refreshed.

Which
Pocket PC / Windows Smartphones can use Memory-Map software? |
| |
Any
Pocket PC or Smartphone that uses Windows Mobile 5 or 6 operating system. In addition
the Road Angel Navigator 7000 is also
supported. Make sure you are using the latest version of Memory-Map on both your PC and mobile device for compatibility.
Use the Web > Check for Updates option in your software to auto check your version and download the latest as required.
|
 |
|
|
How
much memory does my Pocket PC need? |
| |
It
is possible to run Memory-Map in 16Mb
devices. If you need to store more maps
then an additional storage device such
as a Compact Flash card, SD or Micro
Drive is recommended. You
can buy your extra memory direct from
Memory-Map. |
|
|
|
|
Is
there a faster way to send maps to the
Pocket PC? |
| |
If
you are using a serial ActiveSync
connection try upgrading to USB -
this provides a much faster connection.
If
you're already using USB then try
copying the maps using Windows Explorer
as this can sometimes be faster than
using the Memory Map Send
Map to PDA command.
Tip:
If you click on Explore in Microsoft
ActiveSync you can simply drag and
drop tiles between your PC and Pocket
PC.
If
you're using an additional storage
card (such as Compact Flash) it's
about 100 times faster using a dedicated
USB Card Reader than your Pocket PC's
built in card slot. These are available
from most good PC shops - as well
as most good camera shops - or buy
direct from Memory-Map.

What
is the difference / connection between
Pocket Navigator and Memory-Map's
products? |
| |
Pocket
Navigator or Memory-Map Mobile is the name of the software used on Windows Mobile devices such as Pocket PC's and Smartphone. Pocket Navigator is supplied with all standard Memory-Map mapping titles, excluding some overlays and guides titles.
Some differences
are:
» Memory-Map Navigator
supports printing, and has the GPS
interface on the Windows PC as well
as on the PDA.
» Memory-Map Navigator
supports some additional charts and
maps.
» Memory-Map Navigator
provides telephone hotline support.

When
installing Memory-Map to my PDA I get
the error message:
'Windows\AppMgr\Install\Memory Map Pocket
Nav OS 5.CAB" is not a valid Windows
CE Setup file' |
| |
This
is caused by the version of Microsoft
Active Sync on your PC being out-of-date.
Please visit
www.microsoft.com and update Active
Sync to the latest version and then
try reinstalling to the PDA. |
|
|
|
|
Using
the GPS on your PDA I get the message
'Can't Open COM port' |
| |
This
error indicates that Memory-Map is unable
to open the chosen COM port to begin
communicating with your GPS. This will
be because either your have selected
an incorrect GPS port that does not
exist on the PDA, or the chosen COM
port is correct but is in use by another
program.
If
you have other GPS programs on your
PDA make sure they are not running
before you start Memory-Map. You can
check to see what programs are running
by tapping Start > Settings >
System tab > Memory > Running
Programs tab.
|
|
|
|
|
I
get the message 'Failed to terminate
RS-232 thread
' |
| |
This
error occurs when either an incorrect
COM port or one that no longer exists
has been selected in Memory-Map and
the program is unable to close the
port. This can affect you changing
GPS settings to their correct settings.
To resolve this you will need to remove
the program from your PDA completely
and then reinstall.

|
|
|
How
can I send maps to my PDA |
| |
Maps
can be sent to your PDA in one of three
ways:
Send
Map to PDA
If the map is under 400MB then
you can send the entire map to the
device using the Mobile Device >
Send Map... command. A window will
appear asking you for the location
to send the map and then the transfer
will begin.
Send
Visible Map Portion
If the map is larger than 400MB,
such as our OS 1:50k maps, then you
will need to send the map in sections.
One way to do this is to move to the
area of mapping you want on your PDA
and zoom in / out so the area is displayed.
Click the menu option Mobile Device
> Send Visible Map Portion and
then give the map a name and choose
the location to send it and click
OK.
Send
Enclosed Map
Another method to send a section
of map to the PDA is to use the route
tool to draw an enclosed shape around
the area you would like to send. This
shape can be any shape or size as
long as the last waypoint finishes
on top of the first one. You then
need to right-click on the route and
choose the menu option Operations
> Send Enclosed Map and then give
the map a name and choose its location.
This window will also display the
size of the map, so if it is larger
than 400MB make the route smaller
and then retry sending it to your
PDA.
|
|
|
|
|
I've
sent the map to my PDA but when I try
to open it I get the error 'Failed to
open file
' |
| |
This
will most likely be because the map
you have sent to your PDA is over
400MB and therefore cannot be opened.
Please refer to the Send Visible Map
Portion or Send Enclosed Map steps
above to send a smaller area.
If you are using a Windows Mobile
6.1 based PDA you may find that it
will not open maps larger than the
400MB limit. This appears to be caused
by the new memory arrangement in WM
6.1 devices not allowing enough free
memory for programs like Memory-Map
to use. Try reducing the size of the
maps you send to your PDA to see what
works best for your particular device.

|
Which
GPS models can I use with Memory-Map? |
|
|
Memory-Map
supports both Garmin and Magellan protocols
for the transfer of waypoints, routes and
track logs. Any GPS can be used for real-time
positioning using the standard NMEA 0183
protocol.
For
more information and recommended units see
the GPS section.

|
|
|
My
GPS position sometimes disappears? |
|
|
To
correctly calculate your position your GPS
receiver needs to 'see' at least 4 satellites.
Most modern GPS receivers can use up to 12
satellites at a time. Satellite 'visibility'
can be affected by atmospheric and topographical
conditions including tall buildings, steep
crevices and dense foliage. If Memory-Map
displays the GPS Warning' message this means
your GPS is sending an invalid position -
try moving slightly or re-positioning your
receiver. |
|
|
I
can't connect my GPS to Memory-Map? |
|
|

the Memory-Map help files on your PC or click
here for instructions on how to correctly
connect a GPS and how to test the connection. |
|
|
I'm
using a CompactFlash or PCMCIA card GPS on
an iPAQ and get an 'Unable to open COM port'
message? |
|
|
Try
changing the GPS settings in Pocket Navigator
to COM4 rather than COM2. |
|
|
Can
I use the Navman GPS range of iPAQ sleeves
with Memory-Map? |
|
|
Yes.
You will need to have Memory-Map v2.5.6
or later. If you have not already installed
a Navman driver, then you will need to install
the Memory-Map Navman GPS3000 driver which
is available on all Memory-Map product CDs
in a folder called GPS Drivers, or click
here to download.
Note:
If Memory-Map Pocket Navigator displays
the GPS status 'No Signal' then the software
is working correctly but the Navman GPS
has not yet located it's current position.
You can follow the satellite acquisition
by selecting Menu
> GPS> Satellites. When the
bars turn green, a position may be obtained.
For more information read the following
installation instructions;

How
do I set up my Garmin / Magellan GPS to communicate
with Memory-Map? |
| |
The
software is able to communicate with GPS
units made by Garmin and Magellan, and supports
the standard NMEA 0813 output from most
other GPS manufacturers.
Unlike
the basic NMEA 0183 interface, communication
with Garmin and Magellan devices can be
set to a bi-directional interface allowing
Memory-Map software to upload and download;
waypoints, routes and track logs to and
from the GPS, as well as plot your current
position.
GARMIN
- To
set up the Garmin interface, first put
the GPS in Garmin mode: Setup
menu > Interface > 'GRMN/GRMN'
(On some devices this is listed as 'Garmin').
- Next
set Memory-Map to Garmin, click on GPS
> GPS Setup, and select Garmin
in the manufacturer field. The only other
setting you need to make is to select
the COM port number
you are using.
MAGELLAN
- To
set up the Magellan interface, first set
the GPS to the Magellan protocol: Setup
menu > Setup> NMEA > V2.1 GSA.
- Next
set Memory-Map to Magellan, click on GPS
> GPS Setup, and select Garmin
in the manufacturer field. The only other
setting you need to make is to select
the COM port number
you are using.
|
 |
|
Why
does my GPS show truncated waypoint names? |
| |
We
have put in this restriction due to some
Garmin GPS units not supporting the 10-char
waypoint names. It is possible to abbreviate
the waypoint names or edit them once they
are transferred to the Garmin.
|
 |
|
I
am using a USB GPS connection. How do I know
which COM port to choose in Memory-Map? |
| |
All
USB GPS's and serial/USB adaptor cables
require diver software to allocate a virtual
com port to the device. Often the question
is what number com port has been allocated.
This may be discovered in Windows Device
Manager, the path to which is; Control Panel
/ System / Hardware / Device Manager. Find
the Ports icon and expand the content list
to reveal as in the example below that Com
6 has been allocated.

Can
I use my Memory-Map Aerial Photos,
Aviation Charts, Marine Charts
or other maps with the new Memory-Map
2004 Ordnance Survey product? |
| |
Yes,
other maps can be used as normal
with the new features in Memory-Map
2004 but please note that 3D-View
requires maps with digital terrain.
Digital Terrain is provided as
standard on all Memory-Map 2004
Ordnance Survey Editions. |

Can
I use routes and marks from my
previous Memory-Map software in
the new version? |
| |
Yes,
simply use the Overlay, Export
commands in your previous version
to save your data and then the
Overlay, Import commands in the
new version. |
|
|
|
|
Can
the maps be used in other software? |
| |
Memory-Map
Cartography is supplied in the
unique QuickChart file format
which makes the map much faster
to zoom and scroll. The QuickChart
file format is only supported
by Memory-Map software. It is
not possible to export the maps. |
|
|
|
|
What
maps are available? |
| |
A
range of Memory-Map Cartography
is available as well as maps
from many other suppliers.
For more information see the
Maps
section.
|
|
|
|
|
What
map file formats can be imported
into Memory-Map? |
| |
Memory-Map
software can use any QuickChart
files as well as importing geoTiff
(index colour), Tiff (with TAB,
TFW), PNG, BSB. It is also possible
to scan your own maps. |
|
|
|
|
Should
I scan my own maps? |
| |
Memory-Map
recommends buying digital maps
as they are clearer and more
accurate.
Due
to Ordnance Survey licence restrictions,
Memory-Map 2004 Ordnance Survey
Editions do not include a Calibration
feature for self-scanned maps.
Where digital maps are unavailable
it is possible to scan your
own maps and create a geo-reference
file to import into Memory-Map
European or World-wide software
editions. Full details are provided
in the Memory-Map help files
within your software.
The
user is responsible for ensuring
the original publishers copyright
approval is obtained before
importing or using self-scanned
maps and charts. In the case
of Ordnance Survey maps, if
permission is granted by Ordnance
Survey, a separate licence will
be required before such use
for which a charge will be made.

|
'Can't open
Com Port' |
| |
This
is usually caused by another
software application polling
the com port. First check that
the GPS data is entering your
com port using the Windows Hyper
Terminal Utility. Instructions
for this can be found in the
Help files under Trouble Shooting
a GPS
If
no data can be seen, check if
you have previously had a device
connected to the com port and
disable any software that may
be polling the port. Some common
examples of hardware with associated
software and drivers are:
A
telephone - Nokia software
A
GPS - Garmin or other mapping
software
A
mouse - serial mouse driver
A
PDA - Palm HotSync or Microsoft
ActiveSync
If
you are unable to clear the
com port, one option is to acquire
a serial to USB adaptor thus
creating additional virtual
com ports that may be selected
instead.
